The Casting Process

Absolutely — safety is our top priority. We use alginate, the exact same non-toxic, skin-safe material used by dentists and medical professionals for impressions. It sets gently and quickly, causes no discomfort whatsoever, and is completely safe for newborns and even the most sensitive skin. It can simply be washed off with warm water.
The casting impression itself takes just a few moments per hand or foot — it's remarkably quick. The alginate sets in seconds and the whole process is done before most babies even notice. We allow around an hour for the full session so there's no rush — time for you to settle in, chat through your options and have a cup of tea.
Not at all. The alginate is at room temperature, completely comfortable and sets so quickly that most babies are entirely unbothered. We're experienced at keeping little ones calm and relaxed throughout. If baby does get unsettled we simply take a break and try again — there's absolutely no pressure or rush.
We recommend wearing a comfy outfit you don't mind potentially getting a little messy — the materials clean off easily but better safe than sorry! If your baby is milk-fed, bring that along however they take it. A sleepy, settled baby makes the process even smoother, so if you can time it that way it helps. Other than that, we'll guide you through everything when you arrive.

Booking & Timing

We can cast from just a few days old — and many families book in those magical first weeks when the tiny details are at their most precious. There's no upper age limit either; we create beautiful castings for children and adults of all ages. The pricing varies slightly by age and size, so do mention your baby's age when enquiring.
Yes, absolutely — and we'd encourage it! Many families book during pregnancy so everything is in place as soon as baby arrives. We simply confirm the session once your little one is here. Just give us an idea of your due date and your ideal timeframe and we'll pencil you in.
All sessions are held at our home studio in Dunfermline, Fife. It's a calm, relaxed environment — nothing clinical or formal. We're easily accessible from across Fife and Edinburgh, and there's parking available.

The Finished Keepsake

Each piece is handcrafted individually, so we ask for 16–20 weeks for the finished keepsake. We know that sounds like a wait, but every piece receives the time and care it deserves — and the result is something that will last a lifetime. We'll keep you updated throughout the process and let you know the moment it's ready.
Yes — that's exactly what makes every Maroma Castings piece unique. We offer a wide range of paint finishes including white, cream, ivory, soft pink, baby blue, gold metallic, stone grey, and more. Frames come in various styles and finishes too. We'll chat through all the options at your session and make sure the final piece is exactly what you envisioned.
Absolutely. Most customers choose to add their baby's name, date of birth, birth weight, or a short message. These personal touches make the piece even more special and are included as part of the bespoke service. We'll go over all the options at your session.
Framed castings are mounted and displayed within a beautiful bespoke frame — perfect for hanging on the wall. Sculptures are larger, fully three-dimensional pieces that stand freely on a shelf or surface. Sculptures tend to capture more detail and have a real statement presence. Both are completely handcrafted and personalised.

Dog Paw Castings

We do! Dog paw castings are a wonderful and meaningful keepsake — whether as a gift, a celebration of your companion, or a tribute to a beloved pet. The same skin-safe alginate is used, and the process is just as quick and gentle. Just mention it when you enquire and we'll talk through the details.
Yes — the alginate we use is completely non-toxic and safe for animals. The impression takes just seconds, and most dogs are entirely unbothered. If your dog is particularly wriggly, it can help to have someone keep them calm while we do the casting — we'll talk through the best approach when you book.
